Iowa Governor’s Race

Posted by freetoken on 20th January 2010

Well, 2010 is an election year and there will be much to discuss. I would like to focus on some of the state candidates who seem to represent to the bleeding edge of the hard-right/anarchist/religious-right movement.

Many of these of course have had involvement in, or are currently involved in, GOP politics. However, they have learned that the Tea Parties are their true home, and are now exploiting that venue.

I looked last year a little bit at gubernatorial candidate and state senator Randy Brogdon in Oklahoma, so let us now move onto another region back in “God’s country”, Iowa.

Add an ImageBob Vander Plaats is running for Governor of Iowa. He has been involved in Iowa GOP politics for some time. As you can see from him listing an endorsement by David Barton prominently on his web page, you can pretty much guess where Vander Plaats is on most issues.

You can find a video of him at the top of Iowa’s own TeaPartyPatriots website. The video is on the top of the stack. At around 18:00 or so on the recording you can hear Vander Plaats get into the meat of one of his favorite topics, school prayer.

Around 28:00 note that he says he has run as a Republican before “despite the Republican party” and then goes on to note that he has disagreed with the GOP on many items before.

Around 31:00 video he mentions that his first act as Governor would be to order a stay on same sex marriages. A central Iowa newspaper has discussed this signature issue of Vander Plaats before, as well as his attempt to broaden out from his socon agenda.

Around 43:00 or so he gets into education, with the usual refrain. Wants private school reps and home-school reps on the Iowa SBOE.

The list goes on… Throughout the video he plays well on getting the crowd to believe he is talking about them when he is speaking of himself. Speaks fondly of Bobby Jindal. Speaks of Huckabee and Chuck Norris endorsing his campaign. Calls Barton a “Constitutional scholar”. Pretty much the entire menu of all Tea Party-isms.

Vander Plaats own Wikipedia entry doesn’t say much, but from the entry for University of Iowa professor Tara Smith:

When a candidate for Deputy Governor in Iowa in 2006, Bob Vander Plaats, advocated teaching intelligent design in public schools in Iowa, Smith and 25 other PhDs and other interested citizens wrote a letter to the editor of the Des Moines Register in association with the 2006 election which was published on October 23, 2006.

(See Smith’s Panda’s Thumb entry.)

Will Vander Plaats succeed? He almost won the GOP nomination previously (came within a few thousand votes), and with the Tea Party movement now pushing for control of the local GOPs, will this be Vander Plaats’ year?

With the local and state level GOP candidates now running for Tea Partiers’ endorsement, it makes sense that the national level GOP leaders are following, they need their base. They are correctly reading the tea leaves – the local GOP (in parts of the country) is being infiltrated by Tea Party activists.

David Brooks is on the button when he says today:

Every idea associated with the educated class has grown unpopular over the past year. The educated class believes in global warming, so scepticism about global warming is on the rise. The educated class supports abortion rights, so public opinion is shifting against them.

Should make for an interesting year.
